Reading is one of the UK’s elite rowing universities

The University of Reading has consistently been ranked as one of the top UK universities for rowing: in 2011-12 British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) ranked Reading third overall for the season.

Our all-conquering heavyweight women’s crew were BUCS champions in the eight, coxed four, quadruple sculls and double sculls. In the Women’s Head of River Race in 2012 they won the University pennant and finished 7th overall. Our lightweight women’s squad have been the top university for the last two years. Our heavyweight and lightweight men dominated most of the BUCS sculling events from 2006 to 2010 and have pre-qualified for Henley Royal Regatta for the last five years.

In the London Olympics 2012 an incredible three current students and seven alumni were selected for the GB rowing team.

• Alex Gregory (BSc Geography 2006) gold in four
• Anna Watkins (current student, studying for a PhD in Maths) gold in double scull
• Bill Lucas (BA Politics and International Relations 2009) 5th in double scull
• Charles Cousins (BSc Psychology 2010) 5th in quadruple scull
• Natasha Page (BA Art 2007) 5th in eight
• Ric Egington (BSc Zoology 2001) bronze in eight
• Sam Townsend (BSc Rural Environmental Sciences 2010) 5th in double scull
• Debbie Flood (BSc Physiology and Biochemistry 2005) 6th in quadruple scull
• Alex Partridge (current student on Henley Business School MBA programme) bronze in eight
• Adam Freeman-Pask (current student studying for a PhD in Biological Science) lightweight reserve.

Facilities

We have an excellent boathouse (RUBC) located on the River Thames at Caversham, less than 3 miles from our main campus. We have 6km of undisturbed river and we are the closest university to Henley-on-Thames and conveniently located near London for the head of river races. The boat house is less than a mile from GB Rowing’s Redgrave Pinsent Rowing Lake. A three year fund-raising appeal has seen nearly £150,000 donated to ensure RUBC has first class boats and equipment.

Facilities on campus are just as good. The SportsPark is a modern-multipurpose sports centre offering everything required for land-based training. The Vo2 Fitness Studio has over 100 stations of fitness equipment including a large range of Olympic bars, dumbbells, benches, racks and platforms. The SportsPark is conveniently located adjacent to the academic buildings and is surrounded by the halls of residence.

The professionally structured training programme and high quality coaching encourage rowers to fulfil their potential as our track record proves. The programme is managed by our Director of Rowing, Will Rand, and not only includes sessions on the water, but a strength and fitness based programme that is designed to develop the physical characteristics needed for high-performance rowing

At the University of Reading, we understand the difficulties that can be experience by students who are trying to balance the demands of academic study and the high-level of commitment that is needed to be successful in rowing. The location of our boat house and the SportsPark means students can utilise their time in the best possible way to follow in the footsteps of our rowing Olympians and achieve outstanding success both academically and in rowing.

John Nike Sports Scholarship
Thanks to a generous donation by John Nike, our top scholarship is awarded to a student who shows the most potential to be selected for the GB Olympic Games team. This year’s recipient is Caragh McMurtry, who is already in the GB senior squad after winning a silver medal in the pair in the U23 World Championships in 2012. Caragh was part of RUBC’s all-conquering eight in 2011-12 and had many other gold medal winning performances in BUCS events.

A previous recipient of the award was Sam Townsend, who fulfilled his dreams by reaching the Olympic double sculls final with fellow Reading alumni, Bill Lucas, in London 2012.

Most of the University of Reading Olympians from London 2012 were heavily involved in RUBC when they were students. At the Fours Head in 2008 our quadruple scull consisting of Alex Gregory, Bill Lucas, Charles Cousins and Sam Townsend finished 2nd overall. On many other occasions they enjoyed representing the University of Reading away from the pressure of GB trials or rowing internationally. The University also ensured they were given all academic support they needed to meet the demands of their course.
